 Frequently Asked Questions

WHERE IS THE UCARD OFFICE?

There are two UCard locations. Both offices offer the same services, so please go to whichever is more convenient for you.

Main Campus: A. Ray Olpin Union building (200 S. Central Campus Dr.) in room 158. Hours are 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM M-F, excluding University sanctioned campus closure days and holidays.

Main Hospital: ACC building of the University of Utah Hospital (50 N. Medical Dr.) in LL2, room B016. Hours are 8:00 AM – 3:00 PM M-F, excluding University sanctioned campus closure days and holidays.

WHAT WILL MY UCARD LOOK LIKE AND WHAT INFORMATION WILL BE ON IT?

ucard main campus

Main Campus: The card will be a horizontal red card with your photo, full name, classification, and uNID. There will not be any other information associated with you (DOB, SSN, etc.) on your card to protect your privacy.

UHealth: The card will be a vertical white card with your photo, name, relevant credentials/certifications (optional), pronouns (optional) title, department, and uNID. There will also be a stripe across the top of the badge that may denote different types of privileges. Please verify with your supervisor what the title and department should be displayed as for consistency and correctness.

HOW DO I UPLOAD MY PHOTO FOR MY UCARD?

For your photo, you can either come in person to one of our offices or submit a photo online to be approved. Photo approval typically takes 24-48 hours to complete and an email will be sent to you.

WHAT DO I NEED TO BRING TO GET MY UCARD?

Please have your University Number Identification (uNID) ready and available. We may not be able to search you up by name due to multiple people having the same name.

The University of Utah requires a valid form of photo identification to ensure the UCard is made for the correct person. No information is recorded when your identification is submitted for verification. This is designed to protect the privacy of each University of Utah campus member.

I AM A UONLINE STUDENT. HOW DO I GET MY UCARD?

UCards are distributed to everyone the same way. If you are a UOnline student hoping toget your card, you will need to come into the office and pick it up.

I CAN’T PICK UP MY UCARD IN PERSON. CAN IT BE MAILED TO ME?

The UCard office can only mail cards to locations within the inter-campus mailing system. This typically will take 5-7 business days to reach you.  Please provide us with the full name of the person it is being sent to, the building, and the department. The inter-campus mailing system is separate from the UCard office, so unfortunately we will not be able to provide updates on when the card will be coming once we’ve mailed it out.

If you are looking for a UCard to be sent to a private residence, please reach out to someone who would be able to pick up the card in person to mail it to you. Once you have done that, please email us with your information (full name, UNID) and their information (full name, pick up date). We will confirm their identity at the office so please be sure they have a valid form of ID.

HOW MUCH IS IT FOR A NEW UCARD?

  • The first UCard is free to for-credit students, staff, and faculty.
  • The first UCard is $10 for OSHER/HB60 students, vendors, and affiliate UCards.
  • Replacement UCards for everyone are $20.

DO I HAVE TO BUY A NEW UCARD EVERY TIME I LOSE ONE?

If you have previous UCards that you have found after you lost them, you can bring those in to be reactivated if you lose your current active card instead of purchasing a new one. Please note that we are unable to reactive old UCards if the job title/classification is not up to date.

CAN I HAVE MULTIPLE UCARDS ACTIVE AT THE SAME TIME?

Only one UCard will be active at the same time, with the exception of MRI technicians. If you misplace your UCard and get a new one, the old one will be automatically deactivated.

CAN I SWITCH WHICH CARD IS ACTIVE WITHOUT COMING INTO THE OFFICE?

For privacy and security reasons, we require individuals to come in person to switch access from UCard to UCard. Please be sure to bring a valid form of ID when reactivating an old UCard.

IF I AM STUDENT AND I HAVE A JOB ON CAMPUS, DO I NEED A NEW UCARD?

You are able to get a new UCard to reflect your classification change, but it is not always necessary. Your first staff/student card is free of charge. Please ask your supervisor what they prefer.

THERE WAS A MISTAKE ON MY UCARD. DO I HAVE TO PAY FOR A NEW UCARD?

Clerical errors do not have an associated fee. Please bring the UCard in and we can print you a corrected one free of charge.
